Students earn awards at bicentennial expo

More than 10,000 students attended the three-day “Tuscaloosa Through Time” Bicentennial Expo last week at the Bryant Conference Center.
The Tuscaloosa 200 Bicentennial Commission hosted the expo, which featured student-designed exhibits, all detailing the different eras of Tuscaloosa.
At the expo’s conclusion, the best exhibits were given these awards:
• Best Experience: Tuscaloosa Magnet Elementary School
• Best Use of Technology: University Place Elementary School
• Best Historical Representation: Holy Spirit High School
• Best Collaborative Content: Tuscaloosa Magnet Middle School
• Best in Show: Tuscaloosa Academy (Middle) Upper School
• People’s Choice: Arcadia Elementary
• Honorable mention: Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School, Northridge Middle School, Southview Elementary School and Westlawn Middle School
• Mayor’s Choice Award: Oakdale Elementary School
The Tuscaloosa 200 Bicentennial Commission has had events scheduled throughout the year to make the city’s 200th year.
The commission will host a “Community Book Experience,” featuring book signings by Tuscaloosa historian Guy Hubbs, author of “Tuscaloosa — 200 Years in the Making,” from 2-4 p.m. Sept. 22 at the Tuscaloosa Federal Building and United States Courthouse, 2005 University Blvd.
And the year of bicentennial festivities concludes on Dec. 13, 2019, with the 200th Birthday Party and Holiday Parade, featuring the unveiling of a commemorative sculpture at Manderson Landing, Christmas tree lighting downtown and the sealing of a time capsule.
