Your guide to Gainesville's Tom Petty festivals on Oct. 17-20, 2019

A quick look at the two music festivals celebrating Gainesville native Tom Petty on the weekend of what would be his 69th birthday, Oct. 20.

TOM PETTY WEEKEND

WHAT: Three-day celebration Oct. 17-19 features 32 musical acts on two stages including The Shelters, Morningbell, Someday Honey, The Mudpies with Danny Roberts and other acts on Friday; Southern Accents, The Bayjacks with Tom Leadon, Trigger City with Charlie Hargrett, Fodderwing and other acts on Saturday. Also features storytellers, vendors and food trucks

WHEN: 5 p.m.-10 p.m. Thursday, 2 p.m.-midnight Friday, 2 p.m.-midnight Saturday

WHERE: Heartwood Soundstage, 619 S. Main St., inside the Baird Center at the northeast intersection of South Main Street and Depot Avenue

ADMISSION: Tickets are $50 for all three days; day passes for Friday or Saturday only are $30 each; a Gold pass including all three days, access to VIP areas and other extras is $100.

TOM PETTY BIRTHDAY BASH

WHAT: Three-day festival Oct. 18-20 features more than 20 musical acts on two stages including Heavycrutch, Have Gun Will Travel and Scott Free on Friday; Low Cut Connie, The High Divers, Andrew Leahey & The Homestead, Hedges and others on Saturday; Heavy Petty, Dixie Desperados, Tristan, Eden Archer and others on Sunday, with a “Happy Birthday” singalong to Tom Petty at 8 p.m. Sunday. Saturday and Sunday also offers vendors and food trucks.

WHEN: Music runs 6:30 p.m.-10:30 p.m. Friday, 1 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Saturday, 2 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Sunday

ADMISSION: Free, with four VIP packages offering extras, some including access to VIP areas, a Kickoff Party on Friday and other extras, ranging from $49 to $189, with proceeds benefiting UF Health Shands Arts in Medicine

PARKING

Parking in the area of South Main Street and Depot Avenue, especially on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, will be extremely limited. Tom Petty Weekend organizers recommend using Uber and Lyft when possible and have posted a map of free and paid parking in surrounding areas on its website. The Tom Petty Birthday Bash also offers a $189 VIP package that includes guaranteed premium parking.

 

DEPOT AVENUE CLOSURE

Depot Avenue will be closed from Southeast 2nd Street to the traffic circle at Depot Avenue and South Main Street on Saturday and Sunday, with vendors set up in the street both days.

 

FOOD AND DRINKS

Vendors and food trucks will be available at both festivals, and beer and wine also will be available at both locations including Depot Park.

 

DO'S AND DON'T'S

DO BRING: Lawn chairs and blankets, sunscreen and hats to both festivals.

DON'T BRING: Coolers, outside food and alcohol, dogs to either event.

 

GOING TO BOTH FESTIVALS?

While the two events do overlap on Friday and Saturday, only Saturday offers full-day lineups at both festivals, so check the scheduled acts for each event and plan your viewing accordingly. Last year, Tom Petty Weekend at Heartwood Soundstage offered a side entrance facing Depot Avenue for easy transit between the two festivals and organizers plan to offer it again this year.
