After a week of uncertainty as companies and speakers dropped out, South by Southwest 2020 was canceled.

Austin Mayor Steve Adler, in a March 6 news conference, declared a local disaster over concern about the spread of COVID-19, preventing SXSW from taking place. Travis County Judge Sarah Eckhardt also made a companion disaster declaration that applied to festival gatherings countywide.

Since then, Central Texas has had confirmed cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus.
