Emily Le Coz is GateHouse Media’s national data projects editor and oversees a team of journalists dedicated to data-driven investigations. Among them: the award-winning “In the Shadow of Wind Farms” about how energy companies con private landowners into giving up their property rights for generations.
Previously, Emily served as the deputy investigations editor for the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, where she and her team won numerous national awards – including the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Journalism Award and the ASNE Batten Medal in Public Service Journalism – for a series called “Bias on the bench,” about racial discrimination in criminal sentencing.
Before joining the Herald-Tribune in 2015, Emily worked as an investigative reporter for The Clarion-Ledger in Jackson, Mississippi, where she also covered the state legislature and was a stringer for Reuters. And before that, she covered local politics for the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal in Tupelo.
Michael Braga

Michael Braga is a regional investigations editor for GateHouse Media. He shared the Pulitzer Prize in Investigative Journalism in 2016 for a series of stories about rising incidents of injury and death after funding cuts at Florida’s mental hospitals. He was named a finalist for the same award in 2009 after co-authoring a series about real estate flipping fraud that led to more than 30 indictments.
Braga also co-authored a prize winning series about bank failures and edited the acclaimed Bias on the Bench series that used tens of millions of criminal court records to show that black Floridians spend far more time behind bars than whites accused of the same crimes.
Prior to joining the Sarasota Herald-Tribune’s investigative team, Braga spent 15 years as a business reporter and editor in Florida. He has B.A. in History from Duke University, a M.A. in economics from the University of Texas at Austin and spent nearly three years working for newspapers and magazines in Venezuela and Argentina.
Pat Beall

Pat Beall’s investigations have been taught in college classes, circulated in church bulletins and credited with changing policy and saving lives. For explaining how Florida ignited the heroin epidemic, she won the 2018 Sigma Delta Chi Award for Non-Deadline Reporting and a 2018 National Headliner Second Place Award for Investigative Reporting. Her memoir of child abuse earned finalist honors in narrative storytelling from the 2018 Society for Features Journalism and prison investigations won the 2015 Barlett & Steele Bronze Medal and the 2014 Hillman Prize. With colleagues, reporting on police shootings garnered the 2016 Sigma Delta Chi Award for Investigative Reporting, and heroin reporting won the 2016 Association of Health Care Journalists Award for Public Health Reporting and was a finalist from the Anthony Shadid Award for Journalism Ethics.
Josh Salman

Josh Salman is an award-winning investigative reporter for GateHouse Media in Florida. Prior to joining the national team, he spent six years at the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, first as a business reporter before working his way up to projects. He served on the team that produced “Bias on the Bench” and was named Journalist of the Year in 2016 by the Florida Chapter for the Society of Professional Journalists.
He started his career as a government reporter for the Charlotte Sun, a smaller daily newspaper in Port Charlotte. He also spent a year at the Bradenton Herald as a business writer before joining the Herald-Tribune in November 2012.
His reporting has triggered federal investigations, uncovered illegal activity by convicted felons, exposed loopholes that have cost taxpayers millions of dollars, prompted new city ordinances and helped struggling families save their dream homes.

Lucille Sherman is GateHouse Media’s national data reporter. She works on national, data-driven projects for the company and also helps smaller newspapers with their own data projects.
Previously, Lucille was a journalism student at the University of Missouri – she graduated in December 2017.
She also was GateHouse Media’s first investigations intern and spent the summer of 2017 working with Emily Le Coz on an investigation into the wind industry entitled “In the Shadow of Wind Farms” that won the S.A.B.E.W. Award for Innovation and was a finalist for a Scripps Howard Award in Multi-Media Journalism.

Daphne Chen is a data and investigative reporter with GateHouse Media. She was previously an investigative reporter at the Deseret News in Salt Lake City, where she won awards for her reporting on the deadly consequences of the state mental hospital’s waitlist. She also worked as a reporter at the Phnom Penh Post in Cambodia, where she revealed a network of bribes that allowed a relative of the Prime Minister to run an illegal gambling ring.

Kenny Jacoby is GateHouse Media’s national data reporter covering public safety and criminal justice. His past work includes stops with the investigative units at the Scripps Washington Bureau, The Palm Beach Post and NBC San Diego and freelance enterprise reporting for Sports Illustrated, The Oregonian and Eugene Weekly. With colleagues, his reporting on police clearance rates for the crime of rape won the 2018 Sigma Delta Chi award for online investigative reporting. While studying journalism and computer science at University of Oregon, his reporting into the athletic department and Title IX office’s handling of sexual and physical assault complaints against athletes earned national investigative reporting awards from the William Randolph Hearst Foundation and Investigative Reporters and Editors..
Jayme Fraser

Jayme Fraser interviews data and people to explore health and its intersection with environment, criminal justice, inequality, culture and policy. She has texted updates while teens ducked under church pews to avoid gunfire at a funeral, interviewed a state legislator as he reached into heifers for pregnancy tests, and revealed through public records that the Houston mayor’s staff used city funds to pay the bills of a nonprofit that later filed for bankruptcy. Her 2010 reporting on a questionable “shaken baby” conviction caught the attention of the Montana Innocence Project, which successfully petitioned for the man’s exoneration. Before joining GateHouse, Fraser was an inaugural member of the ProPublica Local Reporting Network in Oregon, a state government reporter in Montana and a local watchdog in Texas. She was named a 2015 IRE Award Finalist as part of a Houston Chronicle team that investigated the jail death of Sandra Bland. More recently, she also co-taught an investigations class at the University of Montana that analyzed the state’s high rates of drug-exposed births..

Dak Le is a web developer and digital projects manager for GateHouse Media focusing on building and maintaining innovated data projects. He was previously with the Sarasota Herald-Tribune where he started as an information technology specialist in 2005 and transitioned to web development in 2012. During that time he worked with the investigative team on the award winning “Bias on the Bench” series.

Jennifer is an award-winning graphics and visual editor who is focused on data visualization for GateHouse Media. She was previously a Graphics Editor at the Sarasota Herald-Tribune in Sarasota, where she served on the team that produced the “Bias on the Bench” series, helping to win an Eppy for “Best use of Data/Infographics” She also created illustrations to tell the story of “Influence and Injustice” an investigation into the power of prosecutors. She received her B.A. in Illustration from Ringling College of Art + Design.

Dan Keemahill is a web developer for GateHouse Media. He was previously a news applications developer for the Austin American-Statesman and built interactive data projects for the Texas Tribune and the radio program Marketplace. He also worked on data visualization projects with the Knight Lab at Northwestern University, where he received a B.S. in Journalism.
Mike Stucka

Mike Stucka is tasked with supporting national, regional and local data-driven investigative projects. Prior to joining the national team, he spent four years at GateHouse’s The Palm Beach Post, where he helped create an unprecedented look into which Florida felons got clemency, worked with a team to tell the life stories of 216 people who died from heroin-related overdoses, and built a system to grade Florida legislators on their support of open government legislation.
He started his career at The Griffin (Ga.) Daily News, with other work in Georgia and Massachusetts. He had a double major at Loyola University Chicago in political science and communication, and received a master’s in journalism from Northeastern University. He built notification systems that told reporters when President Donald Trump was making another visit to Mar-a-Lago and an FBI informant was arrested on an attempted murder charge.
