Investigating priest sexual abuse in Columbus

Here's what we know

On March 1, 2019, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Columbus released a list of 34 priests who have served in the diocese and who it said have been credibly accused of child sexual abuse. Since then, several more names have been added. As of September 2021, the total is 52.

The diocese was one of hundreds of dioceses across the country to release such a list in the wake of a groundbreaking Pennsylvania Grand Jury report on priest sexual abuse released in September 2018. It was the last diocese in Ohio to release such a list.

Below is complete coverage of the list and priest sexual abuse in the Diocese of Columbus by The Columbus Dispatch. Included are stories about how the diocese handles abuse reports, victims' points of views on the list and statistics on how many parishes accused priests served in locally.

Added in September 2021 is the first-hand account of abuse by a Columbus man, now 39, abused by the Rev. Raymond Lavelle when he was 14 years old in 1997 at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Powell.
