It’s never too early to look ahead at the next football season. With spring football still three months away, here’s how the Austin area stacks up.

1. Lake Travis (Class 6A, 12-2 in 2018): QB Hudson Card will headline next year’s bunch, but RB Weston Stephens looks like an emerging star and LBs Maui Trevino and Nick Villareal form a solid defensive bedrock.

2. Liberty Hill (4A DI, 13-2): RBs Blake Simpson and Jacob Cearley look like the next men up in the Panthers’ prolific slot-T offense, and DE Walker Baty will headline another salty defense for the state finalists.

3. Vandegrift (6A, 12-1): Don’t expect the Vipers to fade away after their first unbeaten regular season with QB Dru Dawson back and the Mongauzy brothers – Tyler and Trey – making plays on both sides of the ball.

4. Westlake (6A, 13-2): Sure, the Chaps lose the bulk of their record-setting defense as well as QB Taylor Anderson, but count out a team that has gone 52-8 over the past four years at your own risk.

5. Cedar Park (5A DI, 8-4): The “Black Rain” defense will roll strong with all-Centex players DE Ben Bell and DB Tammer Alzer, and returning QB Ryder Hernandez brings plenty of grit.

6. Manor (5A DI, 5-7): Loaded defense includes DL Princely Umanmielen and LB James McDonald, and Tulsa pledge Tahj Brooks gives the Mustangs one of top RBs in the state.

7. Lampasas (4A DI, 7-5): QB Ace Whitehead will enter his junior year with two years of starting experience, and he’ll help form arguably the best set of triplets in Central Texas with RB Jack Jerome and WR Cameron Everts.

8. Cedar Ridge (6A, 9-3): With QB Jalen Brown and RB Deuce Vaughn, a Raiders’ program that has gone 43-8 over the past four years may have the best backfield in the Austin area.

9. Thorndale (2A DI, 8-2): Coach Scott Hawkins likes to run the ball, and he’ll be well-equipped with three first-team all-district OLs back as well as explosive RB Jagger Rubio.

10. LBJ (5A DI, 8-3): Skill players abound with the likes of DB Sean Fresch, WR Donte Bourgois, QB Hunter Scott and RB Da’Qwon Donaldson, which should offset a lack of depth on the lines.
