Glossary of Terms

Transitional bilingual education or TBE:
A style of bilingual education in which students are taught in their native language with the intention of transitioning them to an English-only classroom as quickly as possible.
Dual-language immersion:
An umbrella term that includes additive programs or programs in which students learn a new language while retaining or improving their native language, such as developmental bilingual, two-way immersion, heritage language immersion and foreign language immersion.
Two-way:
A style of dual-language education in which the number of students is balanced with both native English speakers and native speakers of the partner language. The two groups are integrated for instruction so that both groups of students serve in the role of language model and language learner at different times.
One-way:
In a one-way dual-language program, all students participating in the program speak only one of the two languages taught in the program model.
English Language Learners (ELLs or ELs):
Students who speak a language other than English at home and have been identified as becoming English proficient.
Native language (L1):
An individual’s native language
Target language (L2):
A language acquired in addition to the native language.
