If you saw Florida’s 2016 spring football game, you might have noticed the 6-foot-5 official working the game.

That would have been Mike Moten, a member of the ’96 national champions.

Moten is a behavior specialist at Gibbs High School in St. Petersburg and for several years started coaching. That took up too much of his time so he turned to officiating.

He has worked Conference USA games as well as SEC games and recently was picked up by the NFL’s developmental program.

Because he is a UF grad, he can’t do Florida regular-season games, but he has worked several scrimmages.

“I was supposed to do a South Carolina game last year, but they called me and told me I couldn’t because I played for Steve Spurrier,” Moten said. “Then, he retired that week. So I could have done it.”

Moten lives in St. Petersburg with his wife and four children, three boys and a girl.
